June 1563 CE
Queen Elizabeth had dispatched English troops to occupy Havre-de-grâce (le Havre), Normandy, after Protestants in several Norman cities had rebelled against their Roman Catholic king in April 1562; they will remain here until June 1563.
The French pirate le Clerc, having meanwhile joined the English invaders and ravaged French shipping, had in March 1563 requested of the queen a large pension as a reward for his actions.
Wounded in his pride when Elizabeth turned him down, le Clerc had sailed for the Azores Islands on what will prove to be his final voyage.
