Guatemala, El Salvador, and Honduras have agreed to revive and reform the old Central American Union under the leadership of Justo Rufino Barrios.
However, Salvadoran President Rafael Zaldivar decides to withdraw from the Union, and sends envoys to Mexico to join in an alliance to overthrow Barrios.
Mexican President Porfirio Díaz fears Barrios' liberal reforms and the potential of a strong Central America as a neighbor if Barrios' plans were to bear fruit.
Díaz sends Mexican troops to seize the disputed land of Soconusco.
Meanwhile, Barrios is personally leading the army into El Salvador, where he is killed at Chalchuapa, El Salvador, on April 2, 1885.
Much of the hope for a reunited Central America dies with him.
