English Virginia planter and politician John Washington, appointed a colonel in the Virginia militia, leads a company of men from Virginia to back a group of Marylanders during a supposed parley with the Susquehannock, newly relocated to the mouth of the Susquehanna River at the invitation of Maryland colonists.
Virginia militia in alliance with Maryland militia surround the Susquehannock fort.
Although the Susquehannock hold out for six weeks, when six chiefs of various tribes come out to parley, the colonists attack and kill them.
The Susquehannocks retaliate in force, attacking plantations and killing sixty settlers.
Washington is criticized for this by Virginia’s Governor William Berkeley, but receives popular support.
