The Huastec people of central Mexico, having split from the Maya by between 2200 and 1200 BCE, had arrived in the Huasteca region in northeastern Mexico between 1500 BCE (Kaufman, p. 106) and 900 BCE (Stresser-Pean).
The linguistic evidence is corroborated by archaeological discoveries.
