Don John of Austria, the new Spanish governor-general of the Habsburg Netherlands, signs the Perpetual Edict of 1577, in February in Marche-en-Famenne.
Because the edict specifies that the Roman Catholic religion is to be maintained all over the country, and because of the absence of provisions for the maintenance of the Pacification, the deputies of Holland and Zeeland leave the assembly.
Don John is allowed to assume his duties only after he accepts the pacification and orders the Spanish troops out of the country.
