The Emperor Taizu of Liao (Mongolian: Ambagyan) is the first emperor of the Liao Dynasty (907–926).
His given name is Abaoji, and he also takes the Chinese name Yi.
He was born in 872 in southern Mongolia and had a turbulent childhood.
His grandfather is killed in a conflict between tribes, and his father and uncles flee.
Yelü Abaoji is hidden by his grandmother for his safety.
He is enthroned as emperor on February 29, 907 and dies on September 6, 926.
