Ernst Ludwig Kirchner is impressed by the graphic art of the German late Gothic artists, especially Dürer, whose influence on Kirchner will be lifelong, but exposure to the Jugendstil movement and the dynamic art of the Norwegian Expressionist painter Edvard Munch had led the eighteen-year-old Kirchner to simplify his forms and brighten his colors in 1898.
