The son of a Dongola boatbuilder, Muhammad Ahmad had joined the Sammaniyyah order.
Later, as a sheikh of the order, he spends several years in seclusion and gained a reputation as a mystic and teacher.
In 1880 he becomes a Sammaniyyah leader.
