Miguel Hidalgo and some of his soldiers are captured by the Spanish government of New Spain and executed by firing squad in Chihuahua, on July 31, 1811.

The priest José María Morelos, who assumes leadership following Hidalgo's death and that of Ignacio Allende, occupies key southern cities.
