Marcomer, a Frankish leader, or dux, …
Years: 388 - 388
August
Marcomer, a Frankish leader, or dux, invades the Roman Empire, together with Sunno and Genobaud.
Marcomer’s raiders, breaking through the limes, slay many, destroy the most fruitful lands, and create a panic in Cologne.
The main body of the Franks after this raid moves back over the Rhine with their booty but some remain in the Belgian woods.
Maximus’s Roman generals Nanninus and Quintinus, on hearing the news in Trier, attack these remaining Frankish forces and kill many.
Quintinus then crosses the Rhine to punish the Franks in their own country, but his army is surrounded and beaten.
Some Roman soldiers drown in the marshes, others are killed by Franks; a few make it back to imperial territory.
