Nadr Qoli Khan (or Beg), an Afsharid Turkmen from northern Khorasan, had served under a local chieftain, then formed and led a band of robbers, showing marked powers of leadership.
As head of this group of bandits, he leads five thousand followers in support of the uncrowned Safavid shah Tahmasp II, who is seeking to regain the throne his father had lost four years earlier to the usurper Mahmud.
