Bolívar, assisted by Antonio José de Sucre, decisively defeats the Spanish cavalry under José de Canterac in the highlands of the Junín Region at the Battle of Junín on August 6, 1824.

About two hundred and fifty royalist and one hundred and fifty pro-independence fighters are killed.
Although this battle qualifies as little more than a skirmish, this military engagement greatly enhances the morale of the victorious pro-independence fighters, with a first win in Perú.
