The British sixty-four-gun warship HMS Lion attacks Stuart's two ships on July 9 one hundred miles (one hundred and sixty kilometers) off Lizard Point, Cornwall, with the Elisabeth nearly sunk and returning to France.

The British officers of the Lion believe that the French ships are bound for North America, so do not inform the government.
