Alpes Poeninae (Roman province)

Alpes Poeninae, also known as Alpes Graiae, is a small Alpine province of the Roman Empire, one of three such provinces in the western Alps between Italy and Gaul.
It comprises the Val d'Aosta region (Italy) and the Canton Valais (Switzerland).Its strongest indigenous tribe is the Salassi.
Their territory is annexed by emperor Augustus in 15 BCE.
Its chief city is Augusta Praetoria Salassorum (Aosta).
