Zhang Guoliang is defeated in April 1860 and leads his remaining twenty thousand soldiers in retreat to Danyang.
He leaves the city on horseback and drowns while trying to escape.
His body will not be found immediately; it will eventually be buried in the Nanjing Pantheon.
With the deaths of Zhang Guoliang and Imperial Commissioner Her Chyun, the Qing government promotes Zeng Guofan.
This will change the course of the war in favor of the Qing and their western allies.
