The city of Peterborough, situated on the River Nene about seventy-five miles (one hundred and twenty kilometers) north of London, in Cambridgeshire in east central England, has grown up around a monastery established in the Anglo-Saxon period, then known as Medeshamstede, which later became Peterborough Cathedral.
