Hideyoshi has been busily extending his control over the daimyo of southwestern Japan during the latter half of the 1580s.

Tokugawa Ieyasu has meanwhile strengthened himself as best he can, continuing to enlarge his vassal force, increase his domain's productivity, and improve the reliability of his administration.
