Action of May 8, 1744,

Years: 1744 - 1744

The Action of 8 May 1744 is a minor naval engagement of the War of the Austrian Succession in which two French ships of the line, the 60-gun Content, and the 64-gun Mars, capture the British ship of the line HMS Northumberland, after a desperate action lasting four hours.

Northumberland's captain, Thomas Watson, and her second-lieutenant are among those killed.

"History never repeats itself, but the Kaleidoscopic combinations of the pictured present often seem to be constructed out of the broken fragments of antique legends."

― Mark Twain, The Gilded Age (1874)
