Fallen Timbers, Battle of

Years: 1794 - 1794

The Battle of Fallen Timbers (August 20, 1794) is the final battle of the Northwest Indian War, a struggle between American Indian tribes affiliated with the Western Confederacy and the United States for control of the Northwest Territory (an area bounded on the south by the Ohio River, on the west by the Mississippi River, and on the northeast by the Great Lakes).

The battle, which is a decisive victory for the United States, endsmajor hostilities in the region until Tecumseh's War and the Battle of Tippecanoe in 1811.

“Let us study things that are no more. It is necessary to know them, if only to avoid them. The counterfeits of the past assume false names, and gladly call themselves the future. Let us inform ourselves of the trap. Let us be on our guard. The past has a visage, superstition, and a mask, hypocrisy. Let us denounce the visage and let us tear off the mask."

― Victor Hugo, Les Misérables (1862)
