Irish Civil War

Years: 1922 - 1923

The Irish Civil War pits supporters against opponents of the Anglo-Irish Treaty, which establishes the Irish Free State under British dominion and without the six counties of Northern Ireland.

The Civil War (June 28, 1922 – May 24, 1923) claims more lives than the War of Independence that preceded it and leaves Irish society deeply divided.

Its influence in Irish politics remains evident today.

"{Readers} take infinitely more pleasure in knowing the variety of incidents that are contained in them, without ever thinking of imitating them, believing the imitation not only difficult, but impossible: as if heaven, the sun, the elements, and men should have changed the order of their motions and power, from what they were anciently"

― Niccolò Machiavelli, Discourses on Livy (1517)
