Jerusalem, Siege of

Years: 70 - 70

The Siege of Jerusalem is a decisive event in the First Jewish-Roman War, followed by the fall of Masada in 73.

The Roman army, led by the future Emperor Titus, with Tiberius Julius Alexander as his second-in-command, besieges and conquers the city of Jerusalem, which had been occupied by its Jewish defenders in 66.

The city and its famous Temple are completely destroyed. The destruction of the Temple is still mourned annually as the Jewish fast Tisha B'Av, and the Arch of Titus, depicting and celebrating the sack of Jerusalem and the Temple, still stands in Rome.

“Let us study things that are no more. It is necessary to know them, if only to avoid them. The counterfeits of the past assume false names, and gladly call themselves the future. Let us inform ourselves of the trap. Let us be on our guard. The past has a visage, superstition, and a mask, hypocrisy. Let us denounce the visage and let us tear off the mask."

― Victor Hugo, Les Misérables (1862)
