Jugurthine War (Numidian War)

Years: 111BCE - 104BCE

The Jugurthine War takes place in 111-104 BCE, between Rome and Jugurtha of Numidia, a kingdom on the north African coast approximating to modern Algeria.

The Romans defeat Jugurtha.

The war takes its name from the Berber king Jugurtha (Berber: Yugrtn), nephew and later adopted son of Micipsa, King of Numidia. The war constitutes the final Roman pacification of Northern Africa, after which Rome largely ceases expansion on the continent after reaching natural barriers of desert and mountain.

Following Jugurtha's usurpation of the throne of Numidia, a loyal ally of Rome since the Punic Wars, Rome feels compelled to intervene.

Jugurtha impudently bribes the Romans into accepting his usurpation.

Jugurtha is finally captured not in battle but by treachery.

"History should be taught as the rise of civilization, and not as the history of this nation or that. It should be taught from the point of view of mankind as a whole, and not with undue emphasis on one's own country. Children should learn that every country has committed crimes and that most crimes were blunders. They should learn how mass hysteria can drive a whole nation into folly and into persecution of the few who are not swept away by the prevailing madness."

—Bertrand Russell, On Education (1926)
