Leuctra, Battle of

Years: 371BCE - 371BCE

The Battle of Leuctra (or Leuktra) is a battle fought on July 6, 371 BCE, between the Boeotians led by Thebans and the Spartans along with their allies amidst the post-Corinthian War conflict.

The battle takes place in the neighborhood of Leuctra, a village in Boeotia in the territory of Thespiae.

The Theban victory shatters Sparta’s immense influence over the Greek peninsula that Sparta had gained since its victory in the Peloponnesian War.

“History is important. If you don't know history it is as if you were born yesterday. And if you were born yesterday, anybody up there in a position of power can tell you anything, and you have no way of checking up on it.”

—Howard Zinn, You Can't Be Neutral ... (2004)
