Lindley's Fort, Battle of

Years: 1776 - 1776

The Battle of Lindley's Fort (July 15, 1776) is part of a campaign by Loyalist and Cherokee forces to gain control over the South Carolina backcountry from Patriot forces early in the American Revolutionary War.

The Cherokees are involved because ongoing encroachment of their territory in the area has led them to take up arms.

These activities prompt settlers to seek refuge at Lindley's Fort in present-day Laurens County.

A joint force of Cherokee and Loyalists adorned with Indian warpaint descend on the fort one day after about one hundred and fifty militiamen arrived at the stockade fort.

Thee defenders repulse the attackers, and when they withdraw, make a sortie and pursued them.

Two Loyalists ware killed and thirteen taken prisoner.
