Planned French invasion of Britain (1744)

Years: 1744 - 1744

A planned invasion of Great Britain is to be undertaken by France in 1744 shortly after the declaration of war between them as part of the War of the Austrian Succession.

A large invasion force is prepared and put to sea from Dunkirk in February 1744, only to be partly wrecked and driven back into harbor by violent storms.

Deciding that circumstances are not favorable to an invasion, the French government suspends the attempt, and deploys their forces elsewhere.

The failure of the 1744 invasion attempt plays a major role in the planning of the next French attempt to invade Britain, in 1759, which will also prove unsuccessful.

“Let us study things that are no more. It is necessary to know them, if only to avoid them. The counterfeits of the past assume false names, and gladly call themselves the future. Let us inform ourselves of the trap. Let us be on our guard. The past has a visage, superstition, and a mask, hypocrisy. Let us denounce the visage and let us tear off the mask."

― Victor Hugo, Les Misérables (1862)
