Ponza, Battle of

Years: 1552 - 1552

The Battle of Ponza (1552) is a naval battle that occurs near the Italian island of Ponza.

The battle is fought between a Franco-Ottoman fleet under Turgut Reis and a Genoese fleet commanded by Andrea Doria.

The Genoese are defeated and lose seven galleys captured.

The battle makes it easier for the Ottoman fleet to raid the coasts of Sicily, Sardinia and Italy for the next three years.

“A generation which ignores history has no past — and no future.”

― Robert A. Heinlein, Time Enough for Love (1973)
