Years: 1403 - 1403

The Battle of Shrewsbury is a battle fought on 21 July 1403, waged between an army led by the Lancastrian King, Henry IV, and a rebel army led by Henry "Hotspur" Percy from Northumberland.

The battle, the first in which English archers fight each other on English soil, ends the Percy challenge to Henry IV.At least part of the fighting is believed to have taken place at what is now Battlefield in Shropshire, England, some three miles north of the center of Shrewsbury.

It is marked today by Battlefield Church.

“Let us study things that are no more. It is necessary to know them, if only to avoid them. The counterfeits of the past assume false names, and gladly call themselves the future. Let us inform ourselves of the trap. Let us be on our guard. The past has a visage, superstition, and a mask, hypocrisy. Let us denounce the visage and let us tear off the mask."

― Victor Hugo, Les Misérables (1862)
