Sicilian Vespers

Years: 1282 - 1282

The Sicilian Vespers is the name given to the successful rebellion on the island of Sicily that breaks out on the Easter of 1282 against the rule of the French/Capetian king Charles I, who had ruled the Kingdom of Sicily since 1266.

Within six weeks, three thousand French men and women are slain by the rebels and the government of King Charles loses control of the island.

It is the beginning of the War of the Sicilian Vespers.

“Let us study things that are no more. It is necessary to know them, if only to avoid them. The counterfeits of the past assume false names, and gladly call themselves the future. Let us inform ourselves of the trap. Let us be on our guard. The past has a visage, superstition, and a mask, hypocrisy. Let us denounce the visage and let us tear off the mask."

― Victor Hugo, Les Misérables (1862)
