Swedish-Novgorodian Wars

Years: 1142 - 1445

In what has become known as the Swedish-Novgorodian Wars, the Republic of Novgorod and medieval Sweden engage in a number of conflicts for control of the Gulf of Finland, an area vital to the Hanseatic league and part of the Varangian-Byzantine trade route.

The Swedish attacks against Orthodox Russians have religious overtones, but before the 14th century there is no knowledge of official Crusade bulls issued by the Pope.

"History never repeats itself, but the Kaleidoscopic combinations of the pictured present often seem to be constructed out of the broken fragments of antique legends."

― Mark Twain, The Gilded Age (1874)
