Tang campaign against Karakhoja

Years: 640 - 640

The Tang campaign against Karakhoja, known as Gaochang in Chinese sources, is a military campaign in 640 CE conducted by the Tang Dynasty emperor Taizong against the Tarim Basin kingdom of Karakhoja, based in the city of Turfan in Xinjiang.

The Western Turks provide their ally Karakhoja with soldiers, but the army retreats when the Tang forces arrive.

Karakhoja surrenders and the kingdom is incorporated as a Tang prefecture.

“History is important. If you don't know history it is as if you were born yesterday. And if you were born yesterday, anybody up there in a position of power can tell you anything, and you have no way of checking up on it.”
