Thessalonica, Siege of (1422–1430)
Years: 1425 - 1430
The siege of Thessalonica between 1422 and 1430 is an ultimately successful attempt by the Ottoman Empire under Murad II to take the East Roman (Byzantine) city of Thessalonica.
Initially, the Sultan desires to capture the city in order to punish the ruling Byzantine Palaiologoi dynasty for their attempts at inciting rebellion within the Ottoman ranks.
Toward this end, Murad II lays siege to the harbor of Thessalonica in 1422.
In 1423, the Empire sells the city to the Republic of Venice, which assumes the burden of its defense.
