Trier witch trials

Years: 1581 - 1593

The Witch trials of Trier in Germany in the years from 1581 to 1593 are the perhaps biggest witch trials in Europe.

The persecutions start in the diocese of Trier in 1581 and reach the city itself in 1587, where the hysteria is to lead to the death of about three hundred and sixty eight people, and is as such the perhaps biggest mass-execution in Europe in peacetime.

This counts only the executed within the city itself, and the real number of executed, counting also the executed in the entire witch hunts within the diocese as a whole, is thereby even larger.

“Hegel remarks somewhere that all great, world-historical facts and personages occur, as it were, twice. He has forgotten to add: the first time as tragedy, the second as farce”

― Karl Marx, The Eighteenth Brumaire...(1852)
