The War in Vendée, a civil war between Royalists and Republicans during the French Revolution, takes place from 1793 to 1796 in Vendée, in a coastal region, immediately south of the Loire River in west central France. The War in the Vendée (1793 to 1796; French: Guerre de Vendée) is a Royalist rebellion and counterrevolution in the Vendée region of France during the French Revolution.

The Vendée is a coastal region, located immediately south of the Loire River in western France.

The uprising headed by the self-styled Catholic and Royal Army is closely tied to the Chouannerie, which takes place in the area north of the Loire.

Initially, the war is similar to the 14th-century Jacquerie peasant uprising, but quickly takes on counterrevolutionary themes.

The nature of the uprising has been disputed by members of the right-wing movement in France since the nineteenth century.

“History is important. If you don't know history it is as if you were born yesterday. And if you were born yesterday, anybody up there in a position of power can tell you anything, and you have no way of checking up on it.”

—Howard Zinn, You Can't Be Neutral ... (2004)
