A general election is held in Canada…
January 1874 CE
A general election is held in Canada in January 1874.
Although the Liberals under Alexander Mackenzie form the new government, Louis Riel easily retains his seat.
Formally, Riel has to sign a register book at least once upon being elected, and he does so under disguise in late January.
He is nevertheless stricken from the rolls following a motion supported by Schultz, who had become the member for the electoral district of Lisgar.
Undeterred, Riel prevails again in the resulting by-election, and although he is again expelled, his symbolic point has been made and public opinion in Quebec is strongly tipped in his favor.
