The uprising of 1857-58 heralds the formal end of the Mughal Empire and marks as well the end of company rule in India.
The Government of India Act, passed by the British Parliament on August 2, 1858, transfers authority to the British crown, through a Secretary of State for India, and represented in India by the governor-general, who hereafter will also hold the title of viceroy. The Act will be followed a few months later by Queen Victoria's proclamation to the "Princes, Chiefs, and People of India", which, among other things, states, "We hold ourselves bound to the natives of our Indian territories by the same obligation of duty which bind us to all our other subjects."
