1835 CE
A Royal Commission is appointed to study the rebuilding of Wesminster Palace and a heated public debate over the proposed styles ensues.
The neoclassical design, similar to that of the White House and Congress in the United States, is popular at the time, but has connotations of revolution and republicanism, whereas Gothic design embodies conservative values.
The Commission announces in June 1835, "the style of the buildings will be either Gothic or Elizabethan.”
