August 1865 CE
A separate division (thirty-two hundred men) that continues towards Uruguay, under the command of Maj. Pedro Duarte, is defeated by Flores in the bloody Battle of Yatay on the banks of the Río Uruguay.
A few hundred Paraguayan soldiers escape by swimming the river Uruguay, while the rest are killed or taken prisoner.
The Paraguyan forces, outnumbered two to one, suffer seventeen hundred killed, three hundred wounded, and twelve hundred captured, to the allies’ eighty-three killed and two hundred and fifty-seven wounded.
Among the prisoners, Flores finds several dozen soldiers from Uruguay, Blanco Party supporters who had taken refuge in Paraguay, then tried to wrest power in Uruguay from the hands of the Flores' forces.
Flores orders their execution as traitors.
