A series of savage attacks by natives…
July 1694 CE
A series of savage attacks by natives on Durham, in New Hampshire, had begun in 1675.
The English settlement is attacked during King William's War, on July 18, 1694, in the "Oyster River Massacre" by French career soldier Sebastien de Villieu with about two hundred and fifty Abenakis from Norridgewock under command of their sagamore, Bomazeen (or Bomoseen).
In all, forty-five inhabitants are killed and forty-nine taken captive, with half the dwellings, including five garrisons, burned to the ground.
Crops are destroyed and livestock killed, causing famine and destitution for survivors.
