The wave of Palestinian violence against Israeli Jews culminates in a Fundamentalist Hamas suicide bombing in which twenty-nine mostly elderly Jews sitting down to a Passover seder at the Park Hotel in the seaside resort of Netanya are killed on March 27; another one hundred and fifty or so are seriously injured.

Hamas leaders call it "a great success."

Israel responds by launching Operation Defensive Shield, by far its biggest ground operation since the eruption of hostilities in September 2000.
