A revolt among Christian peasants in the Nevesinje region of Herzegovina against the state tax collectors breaks out in July 1875 after a particularly bad harvest, following decades of nationalistic ferment in Bosnia and Herzegovina, where the local Muslim nobility often represses their Christian reaya (literally “flock”) more harshly than do Turks elsewhere.
