The Americans, in their hurry to get away, had left numerous valuable military effects, including cannon and gunpowder, in their wake.

They regroup on the 7th at Deschambault, about forty miles upriver from Quebec City.

Thomas holds a war council here, in which most of the leadership favor retreat.

Thomas opts to retain five hundred men at Deschambault while sending the rest to Sorel, and also sends word to Montreal for assistance, since many of the troops have little more than the clothes on their backs and a few days rations.
