Confederate guerrilla leader William Quantrill, who has moved to Kentucky with about twenty loyal followers, had been tracked down in May by Union soldiers, surprised, and shot in the back while trying to escape, after the main Confederate armies under Lee and Johnston had surrendered in April 1865, officially ending the war.
Mortally wounded, he had been captured and placed in a Louisville prison, where he dies in pain on June 6, 1865.
