Albuquerque’s Third Squadron, having left Lisbon in…
May 1503 CE
Albuquerque’s Third Squadron, having left Lisbon in early May, is a navigational disaster.
Caught by a storm off Cape Verde, two of the ships, those of António de Saldanha and Rui Lourenço Ravasco, had been caught by the equatorial countercurrent and sailed by mistake into the Gulf of Guinea.
They end up at São Tomé island, with no idea of the whereabouts of their third ship, that of Diogo Fernandes Pereira.
