1840 CE to 1851 CE
Confusion overtakes the Paraguayan state in the aftermath of Francia's death on September 20, 1840, because El Supremo, now El Difunto (the Dead One), had left no successor.
After a few days, a junta emerges, frees some political prisoners, and soon proves itself ineffectual at governing.
In January 1841, the junta is overthrown.
Another coup follows sixteen days later, and chaos continues until in March 1841 congress chooses Carlos Antonio López as first consul.
In 1844 another congress names López president of the republic, a post he will hold until his death in 1862.
Paraguay has its second dictator.
