A force of ten thousand soldiers under Lieutenant Colonel Antonio de la Cruz Estigarriba had crossed the Argentine border south of Encarnación in May 1865, along with Robles' troops, driving for Rio Grande do Sul.

They travel down Río Uruguay and take the town of São Borja on June 12.
