Richard March Hoe, who had invented the rotary printing press, a design much faster than the old flatbed printing press, in 1843, obtains a patent in 1846.

Because many type cylinders can be placed around the main cylinder, which can move much faster since it only traveled in one direction, some versions of the press are able to create up to twenty thousand impressions per hour.
