The Treaty of Berlin, which had recognized an autonomous Bulgarian principality and the independence of Romania, Serbia and Montenegro from the Ottoman Empire in 1878, has facilitated the integration of West European commerce into the Balkan lands, Bulgaria in particular, where town-centered trade and the guild structure are swept away.
