Anglo-Irish novelist George Moore publishes a book on the subject of Impressionism, Modern Painting (1893).

It is about this time that the term avant-garde is introduced by the critic Théodore Duret, who uses it of certain young painters. (From now on, modernity is to be a recurrent concern of artists and critics. Public acceptance of the new standpoint is slow, however.)
