Anne's proxy marriage in Copenhagen on August…
November 1589 CE
Anne's proxy marriage in Copenhagen on August 20, 1589, had ended with James's representative, George Keith, 5th Earl Marischal, sitting next to Anne on the bridal bed.
Anne had sailed for Scotland but had been forced by storms to the coast of Norway.
On hearing the crossing had been abandoned, James, in what historian David Harris Willson calls "the one romantic episode of his life", sails from Leith with a three-hundred-strong retinue to fetch Anne personally.
The couple are married formally on November 23 at the Bishop's Palace in Oslo.
