The third event is the massacre on…
April 1948 CE
The third event is the massacre on April 9, by Begin's Irgunists and forty members of the Yitzhak Shamir-commanded Stern Gang, of all two hundred and fifty-four largely defenseless civilian inhabitants, including more than one hundred women and children, of the Arab village of Deir Yasin (modern Kefar Sha'ul) near Jerusalem, lying fourteen hundred meters to the north of what is now Yad Vashem.
The majority of the leaders, who favor eliminating whoever stands in their way, including women and children, proceed to do so, murdering captured and wounded and mutilating their corpses.
The Irgun command sends an internal message of congratulations on the “wonderful operation of conquest”, saying “As in Deir Yassin, so everywhere ... Oh Lord, oh Lord, you have chosen us for the conquest.”
The Haganah command condemns the operation, including the looting and plunder that appear to have been the objective (according to recently discovered documents), noting that the village is one of those that had avoided any cooperation with the Arab forces.
The massacre is also condemned officially by the Yishuv (the pre-state Jewish settlement). (Chomsky, Noam: Fateful Triangle; the United States, Israel, and the Palestinians (p. 96 1983 Updated Edition 1999, South End Press, Boston MA, USA.)
